I am an astro photographer. The stars wiggle like that because of the fluctuations in the atmosphere. Everything you observe through your telescope has that waviness. It changes from season to season. Some nights are absolutely gorgeous, and the atmosphere is really steady and calm. The stars will look perfect as nice lights in the sky without any twinkling or flashing. But when it's really Turbulent, in the atmosphere, then the stars will flicker. So when you see stars flickering That means that there's a lot of wind and turbulence up in the atmosphere, oxygen and other gases being compressed and expanded, and making light bend in all kinds of directions. It's a very cool phenomenon. It also sucks a lot because it puts a limit on how much we are, I'm able to visually see through our atmosphere. That is why they put telescopes in outer space in order to observe the cosmos Without any kind of aberrations.

I've looked through a high powered telescope. I know what I saw. I saw Jupiter and two of it's moons. I saw Venus, and It was the night last year that we had a super moon. I saw some very interesting things on our moon with my own eyes as well. I'm not saying your wrong about the firmament but you can see the planets clearly through a telescope. They don't look like moving light unless you don't have your telescope adjusted. I highly recommend everyone get a telescope and look at the sky. it's breathtaking.
