we are typically not trained to shoot in the leg or arm.in training they really drill into you center mass. that's going to be chest, stomach area. you need to physically and mentally tell yourself go for the leg and be 100% that will stop him. but if said person is grabbing a gun and you observe this happening in real time fight or flight kicks in and it's just muscle memory from there.

It makes me laugh when people say we could shoot him in the leg. First of all if you pull your weapon you pull to kill you don't pull it to shoot somebody in the leg. You are fighting for your life. when that man pulls a gun out do you think that man wanted to shoot them in the leg or do you think he wanted to shoot them in the head. The real problem is the man is an idiot and had no chance in hell of not going to jail but instead he took it even further and pulled a gun out and got himself killed. It's his own damn fault. let's be for real people that usually don't like cops it's because they've been arrested because I guarantee you if someone pulled a gun out on you or someone you loved your first response isn't going to be let me shoot him in the leg.
