Cop had no idea why he stopped you. He's hoping you tell him. He's not allowed to start taking things from you including your keys. I know he's worried you may flee. With that logic he should just bust your kneecaps. I should be careful what I say, that cop is stupid enough to do it.

in Colorado the officer can only take your keys if they feel you are a threat or going to flee in this case he had no right to take keys as the person pulled over and was compliant. I'd go to court.
