Intent: The rule is in place to prevent the defense from intentionally dropping a popup to force runners out at other bases, essentially creating an unfair advantage.

MLB is designed to prevent a defensive team from intentionally dropping a popup to turn a double play or triple play with less than two outs and runners on first and second, or bases loaded. When the conditions are met, the umpire declares an infield fly, automatically making the batter out regardless of whether the ball is caught. The runners can advance at their own risk, just as on any other fly ball
