Absolutely within his rights. They put the fear for his safety in question, impeded his travel, they chose their action, and stood in front of his truck knowing what was the likely outcome for the guy in the truck. Only thing he did wrong was going to slow, I would have hit the gas blow my horn letting them know my course of action which was caused by their intent. Getting out of harms way is a personal obeglation or not to was their choice and with enough time and opportunity to move to safety. .
I would be scared amd want to get away from them and would pamick. people should never be blocking cars moving with their bodies just because of their protesting and not expect a bad outcome. stay at a safe distance amd respect others rights amd vehicles and this wouldn't happen
