anyone who uses one of those ramps knows that the truck stops almost dead instantly. The Jake brake still isn't going to be working going up that hill and the bumper will be plowing gravel and dirt almost immediately. add to that most runaway ramps have spikes underneath the sand and gravel so it deflates all the tires to enhance the stopping power. and yeah that gets expensive and why a lot of drivers would rather chance going over the edge of the cliff than use one of those ramps. and it takes a hell of a tow truck to even move the disabled tractor and trailer even an inch back down that hill, you don't have to worry about it rolling anywhere. but it makes for a good fake video in fantasyland

brakes overheat from continuous use. the purpose the Jake break is to. help slow it down. Thereby requiring less break work. If you've ever gone to Pikes Peak, you know that they stop you half way down to check your break temperature. If they're too hot, they make you stop and let them cool before you can continue. No run away ramps.

It will cost you a pocket full of money to get towed out of the runaway strip but it would have cost them more if they had not used it. I as a driver came awfully close a couple of times to using one of the ramps coming off the Grapevine.
It suck’s when you use those ramps as a truck driver you have to pay for the truck to be towed out

Yep, I've been in this EXACT SITUATION before myself. I wasn't going as fast as he was, but my breaks did fail. The tow and repair bill to get my truck out of that loose gravel/sand pit was so expensive that it was basically my pay that week. Before anyone asks why so much is cause if you have to use the ramp, you do have to pay to have the "Pit" straighten up if your truck leaves any deep ruts in the ramp. Now, if it's just some tire marks, they don't care. But just my luck, my front bumper plowed into the gravel. Was a wild and expensive ride 😆.

I 70 in Colorado always has tire tracks in them,the sand is pretty thick, most have to get towed out.Yhey save many lives

OK, first off I’m gonna explain something to all of you. I drove a tractor trailer for 14 years. A runaway ramp is only used for when a tractor trailer cannot stop because he lost his brakes. That is the only reason that ramp is therefore it’s not for someone to use as a toy. It was never meant for that. The runway ramp is supposed to help the driver stop the truck when he doesn’t have any brakes.

Lost the brakes in a moving truck with my 740i in tow on the back.... had to hit one of these. Glad they were there.
Most of them have about two foot of gravel and are supposed to fall down the gravel or sand

I wish the driver in Colorado would have used the runaway ramp on I 70 . Instead he slammed into a truck and cars killing many people ! Because of the crazy public they got it down to 10 years!

I can’t even back up out of my driveway without going crooked. I would just be stuck until somebody came to back down for me. Of course I probably wouldn’t be a truck driver would I?🤔😲🫣
