I don't think gas lines have that that much pressure, could have been a natural pocket he hit. well I looked it up and found this Transmission pipelines carry gas at high pressures (500-1400 psi). Distribution lines, which deliver gas to neighborhoods, operate at lower pressures (typically less than 200 psi)
